The Old Firm retain a firm hand on the top of the Scottish Premier League as reigning champions Rangers maintain a single point lead over Celtic after the latest round of fixtures.

Walter Smith’s side wrapped up the points before half time as goals from Kenny Miller and Vladimir Weiss secured a win over visitors Aberdeen. Miller missed a penalty kick but the Dons rarely threatened and the Ger’s were comfortable winners. That result put them four points ahead of the Bhoys before their Sunday clash with St Mirren. Celtic were looking to bounce back following a midweek defeat at the hands of Hearts but St Mirren defied their lowly league position and it took a scrambled injury time Gary Hooper goal to separate the sides.

Hearts moved up to third with a 2-0 victory over St Johnstone at McDairmid Park. They leapfrogged over Motherwell who lost to Hearts Edinburgh rivals Hibs despite taking the lead through yet another Nick Blackman goal. Derek Riordan scored both Hib’s goals. Inverness Cally Thistle are in fifth as they continue their impressive recent form. A 3-1 win at Hamilton for Terry Butcher’s men actually started with a Dougie Imrie goal for the home side but Adam Rooney grabbed a brace with Jonny Hayes scoring the all-important second.

That result left Hamilton rooted to the foot of the table and with Dundee United and Kilmarnock sharing a 1-1 draw in mid-table, Hibs were the only team in the lower half to profit from other results moving up to 8th.
