Russia Acknowledge England ThreatRussia have had a wake up call after watching England comfortably demolish Israel 3-0 at the weekend. Russia coach Guus Hiddink was impressed at the turn around in form. Russia also had success at the weekend when they beat Macedonia 3-0. England face 2 crucial upcoming games against Russia. They need to claim all 6 points to keep their hopes of qualifying for the Euro 2008 finals alive. However, Russia are a very different team to Israel and will provide a greater challenge for Steve McClaren’s team. England won at the weekend without a number of key players. Wayne Rooney, Owen Hargreaves, Frank Lampard, David Beckham and Gary Neville were amongst the injured while Peter Crouch was suspended for the game. Newcomers and veterans made up the starting 11 including a return for Emile Heskey alongside Michael Owen. Guus Hiddink was actually linked with the England job before Steve McClaren took the helm. He believes that rather than weaken the side the new players have changed the style of play and instilled new confidence in players and fans alike. Each of the recent callups are playing out of their skin to try and get a regular placing in the national team. Out of necessity rather than strategy Steve McClaren has created healthy competition for places. During the past year the England squad almost picks itself. However, with so many injuries it is time for the young guns to shine. Shaun Wright-Phillips received man of the match after a great display. Debutant Micah Richards proved solid in defence and also scored a well deserved goal. England will be hoping they can produce a similar performance against Russia as they play midweek at the new Wembley stadium. A similar performance would not result in a 3-0 scoreline against tougher competition but it may just see the team through.
