Romania 2-0 SloveniaRomania pulled clear at the top of the Group G with a convincing 2-0 victory over Slovenia at the Dan Paltinisanu stadium on Wednesday.
Two goals in either half of the game were enough to secure the victory for Victor Piturca's side and defeat Slovenia for the second time in 4 days following the 2-1 victory in Celje on Saturday. Romania started the game in an attacking mood and could have taken the lead in the opening minute were it not for some great keeping by Samir Handanovic to block Adrian Mutu's shot.
Romania got another chance to take the lead in the 30th minute but Gabriel Sebastian Tamas hit the cross bar from six yards out. Two minutes later Mutu rose high to meet Razvan Rat's cross but saw his header fly over the bar.
Romania finally took the lead in the 40th minute through Mutu, who headed home a cross by Paul Codrea from the right hand side. Romania nearly doubled the lead in the first half injury time but Handanovic was alert to block Ciprian Marica effort.
Slovenia's best chance fell to Andrej Komac in the 48th minute but his shot was well wide of the target. Marica came close to increase the lead in the 65th minute when he hit the wood work Cosmin Contra was more clinical in the 70th minute after he rose high to head home Mutu's corner. Marica hit the wood work five minutes before the final whistle.
