England’s left-sided problems have become goalkeeping problems with no-one having made the position his own. West Ham United’s Robert Green has become the nearest England have to a first choice between the sticks. The 30 year-old made his international debut in 2005 whilst still at Norwich City, the team with which he started his career, and his recent performances in goal for both club and country have forced his name to the top of a short list.

 

After his club debut in 1999 he had to wait until 2001 before having the chance to assert himself as the number one at Carrow Road. He played a key role in the Canaries promotion to the Premier League in 2004 with one of his best seasons. In 2006, he moved to London to join West Ham United and has enhanced his reputation as one of the best keepers in the division.

It wasn’t until early in 2009 that Green won his second England cap and he ended the year with a red card against Ukraine. Nevertheless, regular Premier League action with impressive form has secured him a berth in Fabio Capello’s squad, probably as England’s number one.
