Redknapp Return To Pompey And Police Station

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is playing down the significance of his side’s trip to his old, mostly happy, hunting ground of Portsmouth’s Fratton Park on Saturday.

The visit comes after he faced further questioning from HM Revenue and Customs over his past transfer dealings.

Meanwhile, his possible future transfer dealings are sharing the Spurs headlines, with names such as Brazilian striker Adriano, Internazionale’s Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari and Milan’s Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar linked with a January move.

With Portsmouth’s financial plight temporarily out of the headlines, attention has focused on Redknapp’s first return to Pompey since walking out on them last October.

Redknapp has, however, denied reports that he would be hiring his own security for the trip, in case disaffected Pompey fans feel the need to air their grievances over his departure face-to-face.

He said: “Am I bothered about some nutter running up to me? No. I don’t need security. I can look after myself.”

He added: “If people are stupid enough to shout abuse, they need there heads looking at. I took them from the bottom of the championship to the top eight of the Premier League, winning the FA Cup.”

Honduran midfielder Wilson Palacios looks set to miss the game as he won’t return from World Cup duty until Friday night.

Last week, Redknapp face three hours of questioning from the tax authorities at a City of London Police station.

The enquiries centred on striker Peter Crouch’s transfer from Portsmouth to Aston Villa in 2002, when Redknapp was Pompey’s director of football. Redknapp signed Crouch for Spurs this summer from Fratton Park.

It is hoped that the enquiries will draw to a close a two-year probe into Redknapp’s, and others’, affairs. Redknapp was arrested in November 2007 and has been on police bail ever since.

Speculation that Redknapp’s White Hart Lane job may have been threatened by these developments saw his odds on being the first managerial casualty of this Premier League season slashed from a 50-1 to 5-4.

But Redknapp is already looking forward. He has reportedly been offered the chance to renew previous interest in Adriano, the former Inter frontman currently with Brazilian club Flamenco.

According to his agents, Adriano has a clause in his Flamenco contract which allows him to leave in the New Year.

Spurs are also reportedly in “advanced talks” with Milan over Huntelaar, who had been a summer target for Redknapp. Welsh full-back Gareth Bale is being linked with a move in the opposite direction.

Meanwhile, Muntari, who played under Redknapp at Pompey, denied the transfer speculation, saying: “I’ve never thought about leaving Inter and I intend to stay here.

Portsmouth keeper David James is also being linked with a £1m reunion with his former boss, as Spurs’ goalkeeping position continues to cause concern.

Injury-hit centre-half Jonathan Woodgate came through 90 minutes in a specially arranged friendly this week. Both he and Croatian midfielder Luka Modric are thought to be two weeks away from a return to first-team action
