Premiership entry worth a fortuneA new report claims that Premiership football from promotion from the Championship is now worth around £60 million for successful clubs. The 3 promoted teams from the Football League Championship will increase revenue by £35 million by joining the elite English Premier League. They also receive further remunerations if they do not survive their season with £20 million in payments over 2 seasons if they are relegated. Most of the new revenue for clubs comes from broadcasting deals which are paid to clubs courtesy of the Premier League. The 6 packages for broadcasting raised £1.7 billion for the Premier League with B SkyB paying £1.3 billion for 4 packages and Setanta £392 million for 2 packages for its sports division. Further income comes from increased gate receipts and merchandise sales. The increased revenue can help many teams to survive the promotion to England’s elite. Many clubs choose to use the new funds to provide transfer budgets to improve the capabilities of their team. Excluding the top 5 or 6 clubs in the 07/08 season most of the other Premiership clubs will be relatively evenly-matched in financial terms.
