Portugal Lose Keeper QuimPortugal Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was confronted with the news on Saturday morning that reserve team goalkeeper Quim will be unable to continue to be a part of his squad for Euro 2008 after he fractured the wrist on his right hand.
The 32 year old Benfica player was injured in the final few minutes of Portugal’s last training session before their opening fixture against Turkey. Team doctors confirmed the news on Saturday morning saying that “Quim took a blow to his right hand, which he fractured”. Following special permission granted by UEFA, Portugal have requested that Quim be replaced by Porto goalkeeper Nuno Espirito Santo. He is expected to join up with the squad in the next few days.
Quim had been pushing for a first team place, but it was thought unlikely that he would have started in the opening game. Sevilla goalkeeper Ricardo was expected to hold the number one shirt on Saturday, despite a loss of form in recent months.
Quim has been capped by Portugal 26 times and is expected to be injured for around 4 to 6 weeks. Tags: Portugal, Euro 2008 Posted: |
