Portsmouth 2-1 Liverpool

Portsmouth moved up into a guaranteed UEFA Cup spot with a 2-1 win against third place Liverpool. Liverpool sit relatively comfortable in the league so it could be said they have their sites on the midweek home Champions League semi final clash with rivals Chelsea.

A Portsmouth opener came from Mwaruwri who chipped over a stranded Jerzy Dudek who misjudged play. Niko Kranjcar doubled the lead for the home team before Liverpoll threatened – Boudewijn Zenden striking a shot off the bar.

Portsmouth held out with stubborn defending but were broken down eventually leading to a Sami Hypia header getting Liverpool off the mark. After breaking the record for clean sheets last match David James was unable to add another to his tally despite collecting his award pre match.

The game was disappointing for Liverpool with Dudek being less than convincing in the away teams goal. However, they now have their sites firmly set on the home leg of the Champions League tie with Chelsea where they currently trail a goal to nil. Liverpool had left Gerrard, Carragher, Agger, Crouch, Reina and Mascherano all out of the side in preparation for the midweek clash.
