Podolski and the “Fun” of the National TeamConsidering striker Lukas Podolski hasn’t scored over five goals a season in the two he has spent at Bayern Munich, the fact that he has scored three in two games already in Euro 2008 indicates that maybe when he does play at this level it really is "fun". After all, he also scored two goals apiece in both the Confederations Cup of 2005 and the World Cup in 2006. Podolski scored two of this tournaments tally in Germany's 2-0 win against Poland in their first match and also managed to pull a goal back in the team’s 2-1 defeat to Croatia. These goals have taken his international total to 28 from only 50 games, with only Miroslav Klose on 39 and Michael Ballack on 36 from the current squad of players to have scored more times. Of the goals he has scored, Podolski says that it feels really good and that it is “fun” playing in the national colours but obviously the team's success is the most important thing.
He made his international debut for Germany in a friendly against Hungary just before Euro 2004. When he was brought on as a half-time substitute in the finals of Euro 2004 against the Czech Republic, it heralded the start of him becoming quite a specialist in the big tournaments.
