Philippe Senderos - SwitzerlandPhilippe Senderos will be hoping to rebuild his confidence and reputation at Euro 2008. The Switzerland defender endured a miserable end to the season after he was attributed to be at fault for two of the goals that eliminated Arsenal in the Champions League.
Senderos is probably best described as an old-fashioned defender. In the mould of a Tony Adams or Terry Butcher and his biggest assets are his strength and aerial ability. When he is focused, Senderos is a powerful defender. Unfortunately he is prone to frequent errors of judgement that have cost his teams results.
As a youth player, Senderos began his career at Swiss team Servette. After his impressive performances as captain of the Swiss U-17 team at the European Championship in 2002, Arsenal beat off a lot of competition to sign Senderos and he moved to the London club in the summer of 2002. After some initial injuries, he finally made his Arsenal first team debut in 2004 against Manchester City. But it was not until Sol Campbell was injured in the 2005/06 season that Senderos got his chance and featured in the Arsenal team that went a record 10 consecutive Champions League games without conceding and helped them reach the Champions League Final.
At the time it seemed that Senderos would establish himself in the team, particular after manager Arsene Wenger chose him ahead of Campbell on a number of occasions. However, injuries and a loss of form have left Senderos often on the bench as the likes of Johann Djourou, William Gallas and more recently Alex Song have been preferred.
Senderos made his international debut for Switzerland in March 2005 and has been a regular player ever since. During the 2006 World Cup he forged an impressive partnership with Patrick Muller. Switzerland did not concede a goal in the tournament but were eliminated eventually on penalties to Ukraine. Senderos himself ended the tournament by scoring but also dislocating his shoulder.
At Euro 2008, Senderos is expected to line up in the defence along side Muller again and the Swiss fans will be hoping that the two can recreate the feat of two years ago. Senderos will be hoping for the same too.
