Liverpool shot stopped Pepe Reina could make himself a legend on Merseyside along the lines of Ray Clemence, boss Rafa Benitez confidently predicted.

 

Reina’s performances between the sticks are one of the reasons why Liverpool’s title challenge is still very much on the rails. And the Spanish international, a European Championship winner last year, plays an equally important part in inspiring the rest of the team. “People don't realise how good Pepe is," Benitez said "He gives the team a lot of confidence and don't forget he is a young player so I think he can still improve."

Reina was even touted as a potential goal scorer by another Kop legend Bruce Grobbelaar who reckons that the Spaniards accuracy could be a deadly weapon. The recent goal assists from Reina are an added bonus to Benitez who signed a new contract recently.

The Reds manager also singled out captain Steven Gerrard for praise and backed him as his player of the year. No less than Zinedine Zidane recently said Gerrard may be the best in the world and Benitez does not disagree. "He would be my vote,” Benitez said, "For me Stevie is one of the best players in the world. To say one is the best above anyone else is difficult because there are a lot of quality players about, but he is one of the best. That is clear.”
