Paraguay produced a dogged performance against reigning World Champions Italy – but it’s time for boss Gerardo Martino to loosen the shackles and let them go for it in their remaining group games.

 

Based on what we’ve seen from the opening games in Group F, a place in the knockout stage is there for the taking and the Paraguayans, known for their toughness and organisation, should revert to the attacking mindset seen in their qualifying campaign.

Although Salvador Cabanas - their leading scorer throughout qualifying - is out after being shot in the head in Mexico City earlier this year, they still have Oscar Cardozo and Roque Santa Cruz. Providing they get the service, they should capitilise on a weak Slovak team and a spirited, but ultimately limited New Zealand outfit.
