PFA Award Rundown

Voting amongst players has now finished for this seasons Professional Footballer’s Association Player of the Year award. The winners for each category will be revealed later in the month on April 22nd. The 6 player of the year contenders contain a trio from league leaders Manchester United, 1 from Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

For Manchester United; Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes show why the club sit 3 points clear and have progressed to the FA Cup Final and Champions League semi final. Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas features in the lineup along with Chelsea striker Didier Drogba. Last but not least is Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard who also won the award in 2006.

Cristiano Ronaldo has set the Premiership alight this season. It could have been so different after controversy surrounded his world cup efforts in 2006. However, Ronaldo stands with a whopping 16 premiership goals so far this season. He is the most exciting player in the country at the moment with dazzling skill combining quick feet with top finishing ability. Ronaldo has shone this season as he has matured into a team player providing a number of assists for United in their quest for a treble. Ronaldo could achieve a personal double as he has also been nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year along with Cesc Fabregas. For this particular award Ronaldo’s team mate Rooney could make it a hat trick of  titles after winning the PFA Young Player of the Year for the past 2 seasons.

Where Chelsea’s form has dipped during the season Didier Drogba has remained a force to be reckoned with. Currently the Premiership top scorer with 18 goals Drogba is still in with a chance of completing an unprecedented quadruple of trophies this season. Drogba has consistently been Chelsea’s top performer of the season which is no easy feat given the quality on display even on the subs bench of the blues.

Drogba and Ronaldo remain the favourites for the main award. Kevin Doyle (Reading), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham) and Micah Richards (Manchester City) fill out the other nominees for the young player award.

PFA Player of the Year contenders

Didier Drogba (Chelsea)

A whopping £24 million transfer fee left Drogba with a lot to prove. He has come up trumps being the first Chelsea striker to net 30 goals in a season since Kerry Dixon. He has also consistently been Chelsea’s top performer during a tough season of perseverance rather than any continued form.

Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal)

Fabregas has been shining his light in midfield in a rollercoaster season for perennial nearly but not quite Arsenal. Cesc Fabregas is still only 19 but is fast growing into one of Arsenal’s key assets.

Steven Gerrard(Liverpool)

England talisman and all round performer. Steven Gerrard is captain of Liverpool and pride of the premiership. Gerrard battles week in week out and continues to give Liverpool that extra level that turns them into genuine challengers for each competition they enter.

Ryan Giggs (Man United)

Getting a bit old in the tooth perhaps. Outshone by younger stars – maybe. Giggs has lost quite a lot of pace over the years but has been reborn as a true midfield general this season. Still striking fear into the hearts of defenders as a winger he has also proved equally effective infield or in playing a free role behind strikers.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Man United)

Top skill, deadly finish and great vision. Hmmm what more is there to say. After the 2006 world cup controversy it could have been very different. However, Ronaldo easily deserves his 2 nominations for the PFA awards.

Paul Scholes (Man United)

After a long period of injury with an eye condition Scholes return to Manchester United first team has coincided with their first serious title challenge in years. Scholes experience has moulded a young midfield into a dynamic work force. His experience along with his still deadly long range shooting adds further dimensions to United’s midfield and earns him a nomination in the PFA Player of the Year Awards.
