Injury hit Newcastle and England striker Michael Owen is to play a friendly for Newcastle United on Monday night. The 27 year old has been plagued with injuries the most recent a thigh problem which saw him miss out of the season opener against Bolton. His return to fitness will be a boost to the club although with the current form of Martins and new signings Owen will have to fight for his place. Owen will be of equal value to Steve McClaren who is facing a striker crisis after the injury of Wayne Rooney.

Kieron Dyer will also play in the friendly game after an apparent U turn regarding his transfer request. Dyer was expected to join West Ham before the start of the season until United upped the price tag for the player. The friendly game will be against local side Blue Star and will also include appearances for Cacapa and Ameobi.
