Old Firm Retain Grip On Scottish Title

The Glasgow double act of Rangers and Celtic once again ended the season as they have so many before – the top two in the Scottish Premier League. Rangers successfully defended their crown – their 53rd Scottish league title – six points ahead of their city rivals and a full 24 points ahead of third place club Dundee United.

Walter Smith once again proved himself to be a wily man-manager whilst, across the city, Bhoy legend Tony Mowbray saw his team dumped out of the League Cup by Hearts and knocked out of the Europa League at the Group stages before being handed his cards. A subsequent shock Scottish Cup exit at home to Ross County did nothing to improve the season for Celtic. The only consolation is that they have yet another shot at the UEFA Champions League next season via the qualifying rounds.

Dundee United and Hibernian are rewarded for consistent performances and their 3rd and 4th placed finishes with Europa League chances. Hibs secured 4th on the final day of the season by beating United 2-0 at Tannadice whilst their rivals for the final European spot, Motherwell, could only draw at Ibrox.

At the bottom, relegation went down to the wire with Falkirk needing to beat Kilmarnock at Rugby Park to edge above Killie and retain their SPL status. The 0-0 draw that resulted sent the Bairns down into Division One. Well before the end of the season, the SPL knew that whoever went down would be replaced by Inverness Caledonian Thistle who sealed promotion via the Scottish First Division title.

It remains difficult to see who will break the stranglehold of the Old Firm. Dundee United and Hibernian came closest this year but it will be a tough ask for any club.
