Aston Villa ended their UEFA Cup campaign in Moscow without 8 first team regulars and with manager Martin O’Neill keeping his fingers crossed that his decision to leave Gareth Barry, Brad Friedel and Emile Heskey to name but three in the comparative warm of old Blighty is rewarded with a shot at Champions League football next year.

 

In making what he described as the hardest decision since he arrived at Villa Park, the former Celtic boss has thrown all his eggs into the top four basket. The 2-0 defeat at the hands of CSKA in the freezing February air was a better result than many anticipated but those brave souls who made the trip will expect to be travelling to somewhat warmer and more glamorous climes come the 2009/10 season.

Sam Williams has returned to Villa Park early after injuring his hip prior to his last scheduled game for Walsall. Having scored once during his spell, the 21 year-old has made a good impression on Saddlers boss Chris Hutchings and, whilst disappointed to lose Williams, would be happy to have him back at any time in the future.
