Road to 2010 World Cup

New Zealand booked a place in the World Cup play-offs against Bahrain, who finished fifth in their AFC qualification campaign, after winning the 2008 OFC Nations Cup. Ricki Herbert’s held Bahrain to a 0-0 draw in the first leg before a Rory Fallon goal saw them secure a 1-0 win in the return leg that also saw keeper Mark Paston save a penalty to help his side book a place in the World Cup.

Key Players

Blackburn Rovers’ Ryan Nelson will be the key for New Zealand’s hopes of registering their first points in the competition. Coach Ricki Herbert has come good on his promise to select the players who helped his side qualify to the World Cup with Aaron Scott being the only player to miss out.
