Moutinho Strike Eases Portugal to Victory

Portugal finished their preparations for Euro 2008 with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Georgia at the weekend. Goals from Joao Moutinho and Simao Sabrosa in the first half eased them through without concern and no injuries were reported.

Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari selected his strongest team with the likes of Ricardo Carvalho and Cristiano Ronaldo included in the starting line-up. Georgia were well organized and provided a good test for the Euro 2004 finalists.

Sporting Lisbon playmaker Joao Moutinho opened the scoring in the 18th minute. After good work by Petit, the ball fell to Moutinho on the edge of the area. He flicked the ball on to his thigh before skilfully volleying low in to the bottom right corner. It was Moutinho’s first international goal.

Shortly afterwards Ronaldo fired a long range free kick on to the bar and Carvalho missed the follow up from close up. Portugal made the victory secure after Simao was fouled in the penalty area by Giorgi Loria just before half-time. He stepped up and slotted a left foot shot low in to the corner.
