More Hammer Blows On The Way

You know there’s something wrong with West Ham when they needed a 93rd-minute winner to see off a League Two outfit at home.

Normally it could be put down to a Premier League side going through the motions against an underdog playing out of their skin but the Hammers had no choice but to take their League Cup tie against Oxford seriously.

And all they could manage was a hollow victory.

After two thoroughly convincing defeats in the Premier League all doesn’t appear to be well at Upton Park, and with their next two matches against Manchester United and Chelsea, things won’t be getting better anytime soon.

There were a lot of jeers from home supporters after their thrashing by Bolton last weekend, but not all of it would have been directed at the manager, Avram Grant.

Instead it’s the two Daves – club owners David Sullivan and David Gold - who have come under scrutiny after such a dismal start.

Their constant meddling with team affairs forced out Gianfranco Zola, a manager who, under the circumstances, was doing a good job.

Sooner or later a club run by owners who interfere and decide on transfers without the manager’s consent are likely to run into trouble.

The policy sends doubts throughout the club – from the players, to the fans and of course the man in the hot seat.

When Grant took the job, he said he wouldn’t tolerate interference from above.

But if this way of doing things is still in place, then Grant has an impossible job and the disjointed performances will inevitably continue.

There isn’t much time to play with and the mess needs sorted out soon, because in a couple of weeks it’s going to read played four, lost four, at the bottom of the table.
