Milan Baros - Czech RepublicMilan Baros is something of an enigma. At international level for the Czech Republic his record is exceptional with 31 goals in 65 appearances. At club level he is regarded as a player who has never quite lived up to his potential and consequently has been transferred 4 times in the last 3 years.
Baros is a quick and direct striker who is similar to strikers such as Michael Owen and Jermain Defoe. He likes to play off the last defender and when in one-on-one situations with the goalkeeper is clinical. He began his career in his native Czech Republic at FC Baník Ostrava. He joined English team Liverpool in 2002 but was unfortunate to suffer a broken leg early in the season and did not play again until the following year. He returned to action the following season but struggled to gain a regular place in the team ahead of the likes of Owen and Emile Heskey.
Despite rumors of Baros’ dissatisfaction with his lack of first team opportunities, he stayed at the club in 2005 to help Liverpool to a thrilling Champions League victory over AC Milan.
However, he still could not secure a regular place and eventually he was transferred to Aston Villa in August 2005. After a bright start, Baros faded at Villa as he struggled to win the fans support. In January 2007 Villa sold Baros to Lyon, but his time in France was dogged by accusations of racism and he was also arrested for speeding.
This season, Baros returned to England to play for Portsmouth on loan. During his time there he has helped the team win the FA Cup, but for most of it Baros was a peripheral figure. His future at club level is unclear.
It is at international level that Baros has demonstrated his abilities the most and achieved his finest moment. At the 2004 European Championship he scored 5 goals and won the tournament top scorer award as he helped the Czech Republic reach the semi-finals.
The Czechs will be hoping that Baros can recapture that form at this summer’s Euro 2008 tournament as well. Tags: Milan Baros, Czech Republic, Portsmouth, Euro 2008 Posted: |
