McClaren Sacked As England Manager

Steve McClaren was sacked as England Manager on Thursday following England’s abysmal showing the Euro Qualifiers. A string of bad results in the qualifiers had left skeptics unimpressed but Israel gave the manager an unexpected lifeline on Saturday with a fine win over Russia. However, England failed to take advantage of Russia’s slipup and an embarrassing defeat to Croatia at Wembley which saw England slipping up and missing out the Euro 2008 finals proved to be the last nail in the coffin of McClaren’s short stint as England coach.

At a news conference at Soho Square, the FA said they had made a unanimous decision to terminate the contract of McClaren and his assistant Terry Venables at a meeting this morning. FA chairman Geoff Thompson said: 'At a meeting of the FA board this morning the FA board unanimously decided to terminate the contract of England head coach Steve McClaren with immediate effect. FA's chief executive Brian Barwick made a personal apology to England fans for the team's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 and said that England’s failure to qualify for the Euro 2008 finals ultimately cost Steve McClaren his job.

While the bookmakers made former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho and ex-Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello the favourites, Barwick added that nationality would not be an issue while deciding the future coach. With only 18 matches as England’s coach Steve McClaren had the shortest stint as England’s coach .He did start off well with a couple of good results backing his decision to drop David Beckham but a loss to Croatia away coupled with indifferent results at home put his England’s qualification and his job in jeopardy and last night’s disaster against Croatia made his sacking almost inevitable.
