McCarthy Backs Bent

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has spoken out over his desire to bring much-travelled forward Marcus Bent to Molineux.

After arriving on loan from Birmingham City, the 32-year old striker impressed on his debut in a friendly and McCarthy expects him to challenge the likes of Kevin Doyle and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake for regular starts. “Everyone anticipated it would be (Steven) Fletcher and Doyle as first choice, but Sylvan scored his couple of goals and has played out of his skin” said the former Eire boss, “Now we’ve got Marcus in as well who will give us more competition for places.”

Despite a comparative lack of competitive action last season, Bent has shown that he is very much still capable of performing at the highest level and McCarthy for one is very pleased to have him in his squad. “I’m delighted we’ve brought him in. He’s done well in training and did all the fitness testing before he came and had a good medical – he’s in good shape.”

One other reason for McCarthy’s joy is that having Bent on his side means he cannot trouble the Wolves defensive line for another team. “Whenever he’s played against any of my teams he’s been a real handful” added McCarthy.
