Martinez Delight At Latics Shock

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez watched his team complete a surprise 1-0 win against Liverpool and did not hold back on expressing his joy at the result.

A four point gap between his side and the relegation places was secured by a  Hugo Rodallega goal. With the pressure mounting on Reds boss Rafa Benitez, Martinez was buoyant. "The things you needed to beat a top-four club were there. Character, responsibility, desire, the 'over my dead body' mentality” said the Spaniard. “This is one of the days to be very, very proud of Wigan.”

Latics chairman Dave Whelan has criticized Liverpool’s owners and said that he feels sorry for the fans. Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks have overseen an increasing mountain of debt and problems with a new stadium in the face of dissent from supporters and Whelan can see their point. "The big sympathy I have is for the Liverpool supporters because they are a fantastic lot," Whelan told Sky Sport, “Liverpool are in a mess. The owners, being American, I don't think they feel what we as fans feel. I'm really, really sorry for their supporters."
