Martinez Cannot Mask His Misery

Frustrated Wigan boss Roberto Martinez couldn’t hide his disappointment as his side lost a two-goal advantage to draw with Newcastle at St James’s Park last Saturday.

Wigan dominated much of the game, which translated on to the scoreboard after two first-half strikes from former Newcastle player Charles N’Zogbia, who was targeted by the Toon boo-boys after an undistinguished spell for the Magpies.

But they were eventually hauled back by Fabricio Coloccini’s 94th-minute header. And Martinez said afterwards: “All we had to do in the end was defend a corner, but we weren’t focused enough to see it through.”

He had some sympathy with his team, however, adding: “The players are left with a feeling that they didn’t deserve to come away from St James’s Park without a win.”

Reports have surfaced this week that the Latics are considering a bid for 22-year-old Spanish striker Alberto Bueno in January’s transfer window.

The Spanish under-21 international is on-loan at npower Championship side Derby County, from Spanish club Real Valladolid.

However, Derby boss Nigel Clough bluntly insisted: “Alberto is here for the season – that is the agreement.”

Martinez chipped in to the debate surrounding Manchester United’s want-away star Wayne Rooney, claiming that player power is increasing in the EPL and that clubs must adapt.

He said: “That’s the price of having such a high-profile league. The (EPL) has that status around the world, the players are becoming more than footballers.”

Wigan play host to Bolton Wanderers at the DW Stadium this Saturday afternoon.
