Manchester United v Chelsea - Trio

Another week of football has passed and both Manchester United and Chelsea continue on their mind boggling form. Each game for these football goliaths from here on in will be like a cup final. Both teams are now in the FA Cup Final, Champions League semi final and both teams are also battling it out for the English Premiership title. It is set to be a dramatic end to the season with the chance of all 3 competitions going right down to the wire.

Manchester United sit at the top of the English Premiership 3 points clear. However they are set to play Chelsea in May at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have claimed the premiership title for the last 2 seasons. Is there more desire in an experienced team aiming for a hat trick of premiership titles or more desire in Manchester United with a few seasons of drought?

The battle does not contain itself merely in the fixtures, minutes and hours of top class football to be played out before the season close. There is a battle on a club level, a managerial and personal level. United are undoubtedly the biggest club in the world. They are known worldwide. Chelsea is undoubtedly the richest. Chelsea have spent over £330 million since Abramovich took control in 2003. The title race also features 2 managerial icons in Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho. Both managers are known for their unique style and success over the years.

On the pitch both teams have enjoyed similar form but in very different styles. Manchester United have progressed with scintillating form and top entertainment even for the neutral fan. Their 7-1 drubbing of Roma pretty much sums up the attitude of the club. Chelsea have plodded through the season. Rather than set the world alight they have battled for results. Chelsea combines top level organisation with flashes of individual abilities to battle for hard won games such as the tie against Valencia and FA Cup semi final against Blackburn.

The dramatic end to the season will be met with fear in the dressing room and embraced by others. So much fame and fortune ultimately rest in the results of 3 matches in 1 month. Both teams have experienced players and up and coming youngsters. Finally, after years of the world’s most popular league being wrapped up early, this one is going to go right down to the wire. Sure you would rather be Manchester United sitting three points clear with a healthy goal difference but Chelsea have been unbelievable this season. Their organisation and perseverance is admirable and it means that in any competition they will just not go away. Turn your back on them and they will punish you!.

I hope for the sake of the neutral supporters but also for the pride of both teams and English football as a whole that neither wins all 3 trophies or an unprecedented quadruple for Chelsea. In fact for English football Liverpool to win the Champions League, Chelsea the FA Cup and Manchester Utd the Premiership would shock the world and increase the lure of the premiership for home-grown and foreign talent. The treble has been done before but possibly in a lot easier circumstance.
