Magpies talisman must stay loyal

Transfer rumours surrounding Newcastle United striker Michael Owen have infuriated Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd. Newcastle and England striker Owen has only played 13 games since his £17 million move to the club in the summer of 2005. His time at Newcastle United and return to the English Premier League has been dogged by lengthy injuries. In his first season at the North East club Michael Owen managed only 11 games before breaking a bone in his foot. He recovered briefly a year ago before being selected as part of England’s World Cup 2006 squad. During the 2006 World Cup Owen suffered a serious knee injury which ruled him out for the majority of this season much to the dismay of club supporters.

Now Michael Owen has begun to return to fitness and form rumours abound in the media with speculation on a future transfer for the player. Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd is furious at the reports believing that they only can have come from the players administration not inside the club. After persevering for 2 years it seems the loyalty of Newcastle United towards its star has not been appreciated. Shepherd has demanded that Owen make a stand and declare his loyalty in return. Given that Michael Owen has just returned from a long layoff it seems unlikely that any big names will be interested in his signing. It is too early to state the effects of the injuries on Owen’s long term performance. We wait to see a reply from the player regarding the recent claims in the media.
