Barcelona director Txiki Bergiristain has admitted that the Catalan giants tried to sign Lyon star Karim Benzema during the summer. Barcelona were one of a number of top European clubs rumoured to be interested in signing the Ligue 1 top scorer of last season, including clubs like Manchester United and Inter Milan. However, it was Benzema himself who turned down any potential move to stay at the Stade Gerland.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has threatened to resign from his role, should work on the French champions proposed stadium not begin in 2010. Numerous reasons have prevented work beginning on the new stadium, including protests from local residents who will be affected. Original plans estimated the stadium opening in 2010, but it now seems as if building will not even start until that year.
