Liverpool 4-1 ChelseaLiverpool booked a second successive place in the UEFA Champions League final after clinching a win over rivals Chelsea in a dramatic penalty shootout at Anfield. Normal play saw Liverpool cancel out Chelsea’s first leg lead with a goal from Daniel Agger. However, it was to prove the only goal in normal play as the game extended into extra time and then penalties. Dirk Kuyt scored the penalty kick which eventually ended the tie and clinched it for the Anfield team 4-1. Arjen Robben and Geremi both missed out for Chelsea. The dramatic end came in a game which lacked real quality but had bucket loads of excitement. Liverpool scored from their first real chance on the night and now progress to the Champions League final against either Manchester United or AC Milan. An all English final would be a great end to a terrific season of English Premier League football and bear testament to the quality of a number of teams in the number 1 UK league. Chelsea will be sorely disappointed by their loss especially given their first leg success at Stamford Bridge. A team which threw away their Premier League chances in preparation for the Anfield match failed to dominate away from home. Having only secured the Carling Cup this season Chelsea now need to look ahead to their FA Cup Final against Manchester United for any further silverware this season. Liverpool on the other hand will be happy with a solid performance and the best team won on the night. They now progress to their second successive UEFA Champions League final in Athens against either Manchester United or AC Milan on 23rd May.
