Liverpool v PSV Eindhoven Preview
Though many people might discount the chances of PSV Eindhoven in overcoming a three goal deficit, Liverpool Coach Rafael Benitez won’t be one of them. He knows well enough that a good team can overcome such a hole, as his Liverpool team did it in the epic 2005 UEFA Champion’s League final with AC Milan. Still, with the Red at home for this second leg, there’s little reason to believe that this game will be anything other than a warm up for the semifinals.
If Liverpool are to be successful on the offensive end, they’ll need to ride the long legs and broad shoulders of striker Peter Crouch. As the world’s preeminent tall striker, Crouch has proved to be quite a match up problem for other squads. Don’t expect Liverpool to play its full compliment of stars in this match, as Benitez has indicated a desire to sit some of his better midfield players. Among those on the bench could be homegrown superstar Steven Gerrard.
PSV, the Dutch champion, is looking to find its early season form. As the losers of their last six matches, they are certainly reeling from a momentum standpoint. Coach Ronald Koeman will attempt to achieve the near impossible without some of his most talented options, as well. Ibrahim Afellay, Alex, Edison Mendez, and Reiziger are all though to be out for this match because of injury problems.
As it stands, Koeman is still proud of his team’s accomplishments this season. He’s being very realistic about their chances in Tuesday’s game. Though it might not be impossible, the coach noted that coming back from a three goal deficit against a talented squad like Liverpool FC would certainly be an unlikely feat.
