Lithuania v ItalyItaly will be facing Lithuania in their next Euro 2008 qualifier match after a disappointing performance in the 2-1 victory over Faroe Islands on Saturday.
The World Cup champions were made to sweat before confirming three points against a side that is ranked 185 in the Fifa World Rankings. AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi marked his return to the national squad by scoring two goals.
However Faroe Islands got one back in the 77th minute when Rógvi Jacobsen headed in the goal and Italy were left defending desperately for the last 13 minutes before the final whistle came. Even though the local media is criticizing the team for its lacklustre performance, coach Roberto Donadoni said the team fulfilled its main aim of playing the game.
"What counts is the win and the three points. We had chances to score some more goals and at the end it was difficult", he said. Italy will be playing against Lithuania in Kaunas on Tuesday as it looks to consolidate on its second position in the group.
The team will be facing a rejuvenated Lithuanian team fresh from the 1-0 victory against Georgia on Saturday. A 78th minute strike from substitute Saulius Mikoliunas was enough for Lithuania to claim a priceless victory against rivals Georgia. Though qualification from the group looks an uphill task, the team will be confident going into the game, having already drawn with Italy during the first leg of the tie. Lithuania is currently at fifth position in the table with 7 points from 6 matches while Italy have 13 points from 6 matches and are in second position.
