Lithuania v Georgia
Lithuania and Georgia are both in a tough Euro 2008 qualifying group with France, Italy and Ukraine to overcome in Group B. Safe to assume either of these teams will not make it through, but stranger things have happened in football.
Lithuania coach Algimantas Liubinskas will be happy to welcome back midfielder Edgaras Cesnauskis who returns from injury having missed the Ukraine and France defeats in March. Injuries have forced the coach to leave out defender Nerius Barasa, midfielder Deividas Cesnauskis and striker Edgaras Jankauskas.
Injury problems have gotten worse for Lithuania as defender Rolandas Dziaukstas has sustained a serious leg injury, which may see him out of the squad for some time. Robertas Poškus, the FC Zenit St. Petersburg forward has been asked to link up with the team so his form and fitness can be assessed before a final decision is made.
Meanwhile Georgia coach Klaus Toppmöller has had to deal with AZ Alkmaar forward Shota Arveladze's international retirement as he prepares for the live Euro 2008 qualifiers against Lithuania and France. Arveladze said injuries have meant he cannot keep up with the pace and thought it best to bow out.
"I said to our coach Klaus Toppmöller, after the match in Glasgow that I was going to quit the team because of various injury problems. I can't take them any more," said Arveladze. Malkhaz Asatiani makes it back to the squad having successfully overcome a serious knee injury sustained last September. Defender Georgi Oniani is looking forward to making his debut after being called up by his coach. Lithuania are placed sixth in Group B with just four points from five matches, while Georgia occupy the fifth place with six points from six matches. Lithuania v Georgia will kick off on Saturday at 19:00 GMT. Tags: Lithuania, Georgia, live Euro 2008 qualifiers, Lithuania v Georgia, Euro 2008 qualifying Posted: |
