Liechtenstein 0-2 SpainTwo goals from David Villa, including a spectacular overhead kick, were enough for Spain to claim a comfortable victory over Liechtenstein in the Euro 2008 qualifier match on Wednesday.
Spain should have won the match by a far greater margin, but the team was not able to convert a number of easy chances, including an injury-time penalty. Spain made as many as six changes from the 2-0 victory over Latvia on Saturday, including Reina in place of Casillas and welcoming back Fabregas.
Spain took an early lead in the 10th minute when Villa latched on to a superb through pass from Fabregas before going round Peter Jehle and passing the ball into the net. Liechtenstein tried to hit back immediately and nearly got the equalizer when Reina fumbled over a long range effort by Michele Polverino, but was able to collect the ball at the second attempt.
Spain doubled the lead in 14th minute when David Silva collected a pass from Fabregas and chipped the ball high into the area towards Villa. The Valencia striker looked in no position to score, but somehow managed to produce a spectacular overhead kick to smash the ball past Peter Jehle.
Spain continued to press forward and Andres Iniesta had a sitter of a chance to increase the lead in the 30th minute, but the Barcelona midfielder somehow managed to miss the ball. Jehle then had to produce an outstanding save to deny Xabi Alonso at the start of the second half. Silva, Luis Garcia, Roberto Soldado and Villa had decent chances to increase the lead, but were unable to convert their attempts into a goal.
Liechtenstein nearly pulled one back in the 61st minute but Franz Burgmeier's curling effort went clipped the far post and went over the line. Spain was awarded a penalty late in injury time, but Villa saw his effort smash against the woodwork. Spain now sit at the second position in the group table with 15 points from 7 matches, two more than third placed Northern Ireland, who can go back to the second position if they win their game in hand.
