Latvia 0-2 DenmarkTwo goals in two minutes by Dennis Rommedahl were enough for Denmark to claim a priceless victory over Latvia and end the week of international football on a positive note.
With the result of the match against Sweden to be decided by the disciplinary committee on Friday, Denmark badly needed the victory in order to keep alive any hopes of qualifying for the Euro 2008 finals next year. Rommedahl, often criticized for not scoring goals from promising positions, looked dangerous from the start of the game.
The Charlton Athletic winger could have put the Danes ahead as early as in the 2nd minute, but his drive was nicely saved by Latvia defender Andrejs Rubins. Denmark started the game in fourth gear and were looking to attack at every opportunity.
Jon Dahl Tomasson pulled his shot wide of the goal while Martin Jorgensen and Jesper Gronkjaer could not take their chances. The Latvian defense finally cracked under immense pressure from Danish attackers. Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner spotted the Rommedahl's run in the box and made a pinpoint cross which was easily converted by the Charlton Athletic player in the 15th minute.
Just when it looked that Denmark will take the foot off the pedal, Rommedahl struck again. Rommedahl latched on to a pass by Martin Jorgensen and smashed the ball from 20 yards out to give his side a two goal cushion and calming down any nerves in the process.
Coach Morten Olsen then replaced Rommedahl with Thomas Kahlenberg at half time and the Danes held on to the lead to collect vital three points in the qualifying campaign. Sweden is in the driver's seat in the group, winning against group leaders Northern Ireland and is expected to be awarded the abandoned match against Denmark.
Northern Ireland currently leads the group with 13 points from 6 matches followed by Sweden and Spain. Denmark is currently in fourth position, with 10 points from 5 matches. The Danes next face Sweden in an away fixture in September. Latvia v Denmark saw 2 goals in 2 minutes to secure a valuable away win. Tags: Denmark, Latvia, Euro 2008 finals, Latvia v Denmark Posted: |
