Kuwait 1-1 Egypt

After being postponed from the month of April, the Kuwait - Egypt friendly match finally took place in Kuwait City on June 12. The game was originally due to be played in April, but due to inter-continental commitments besetting Egyptian clubs, the game was put off till June.

The game was also a testimonial for Kuwait national team captain Abdullah Al-Wabran. Kuwait striker Bashar Abdallah opened the scoring in the 10th minute after he was adjudged to have been fouled by Egypt goalkeeper Essam Al Hadary. The resulting penalty was coolly dispatched by Bashar.

Mohamed Abou-Treika came close to equalizing for Egypt before the break, but his long range effort was saved by the Kuwait keeper. Emad Meteb and Gamal Hamza also came close to opening the Egyptian scoring, but hit the post. In the 56th minute Mahmoud Abdul-Razak scored the equalizer. Both teams were unable to break this deadlock and had to be satisfied with a 1-1 draw.

Egypt Coach Hassan Shehata had made his displeasure clear early on and had wanted to cancel the friendly following the fracas in the African Nations Cup Group Two qualifier against Mauritania. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, but crowd trouble marred it and held it up for almost 40 minutes.

Egypt had demanded that Confederation of African Football (CAF) order for a replay of the game, but the CAF had rejected this appeal. Egypt had wanted to concentrate on their qualifier against Burundi, but that game has now been postponed. The reason was that Burundi was unable to find suitable quarters to house Egypt in Kigali.

The CAF informed the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) that the game will now be played between 7-9 September. Kuwait v Egypt ended 1-1.
