King Kenny Reigns Over Chelsea

The long-awaited Liverpool revival under ‘King’ Kenny Dalglish took a turn for the mad at the end of the EPL’s January transfer window, with the Merseyside giants involved in £108m worth of transfer business.

This included the much-heralded departure of star Spanish international striker Fernando Torres to EPL title holders Chelsea for a British record transfer fee of £50m.

Liverpool’s two wins out of two since the window closed, most notably the 1-0 win at EPL title holders Chelsea, suggested it was money well spent and received, as they reached a season-high sixth place in the EPL and are challenging once again for a Europa League place next season.

And their record since Dalglish became temporary manager has impressed club co-owner John W. Henry, who hinted at Dalglish becoming a permanent choice for the Anfield hot seat.

Meanwhile, former co-owner Tom Hicks is taking high court action to allow him to claim for damages against Royal Bank of Scotland and/or former directors over the club’s sale to current owners, NESV.

Liverpool met Dutch club Ajax of Amsterdam’s £22.7m valuation of their Uruguayan World Cup striker Luis Suarez in a transfer deadline deal.

Suarez signed a five-and-a-half-year deal that will “keep him at Anfield until 2016,” according to a club statement.

And the 24-year-old opened his Liverpool account when coming on as a second-half substitute, scoring the Reds’ second goal – into the Kop goal - in a 2-0 Anfield win over Stoke in the EPL.

And the £50m the Reds received for Torres was quickly used to sign Newcastle United centre-forward Andy Carroll for a club record £35m. The 22-year-old has also signed up for five-and-a-half years.

Carroll’s debut, however, will have to wait until he has recovered from the torn thigh muscle which kept him out of Newcastle’s previous five games.

Co-owner Henry commented before Liverpool’s win at Chelsea that Dalglish had impressed him. He said: “In retrospect, you could not have made a better choice (as manager).”

Meanwhile, former co-owner Hicks has asked the High Court to lift orders banning him, and former Anfield boardroom partner George Gillett, from suing for damages over the enforced sale to Henry’s NESV last October.

Hicks branded the deal an “epic swindle” after he and Gillett saw their 50% shareholdings sold off to cover club debts arising from their 2007 Anfield takeover.

Liverpool host struggling Wigan Athletic in the EPL this coming Saturday.
