Jose Bosingwa - Portugal

The Portuguese full back Jose Bosingwa has established himself in the last year as a key member of the national team. His consistent displays for club side FC Porto have also helped to enhance his reputation as one of the best right backs in Europe and this summer he will complete a transfer to English club Chelsea.

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bosingwa began his professional career at Boavista where he often played on the right of midfield. The 25 year old has been at Porto since 2003 when he was signed by the then manager Jose Mourinho. During his first season he played a part in the club’s fantastic run to the Champions League final and following Paolo Ferreira’s departure he firmly established himself as the first choice right back in the next season.

During his time at Porto, Bosingwa has helped them to win four successive domestic Championships.

Having represented Portugal at both Under 21 level and at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, Bosingwa made his international debut in 2007 in a Euro 2008 qualifying match against Belgium. Since then he has managed to displace the experienced Miguel at right back as can now be regarded as the first choice for the national team.

Bosingwa’s greatest attribute is his ability to get forward to support the attack. In the modern game it is paramount that the full backs are able to support the forward play and be able to get back to defend. Bosingwa’s athleticism and strength makes him an able player in this respect.

In May 2008, Porto announced that they had agreed to sell Bosingwa to Chelsea for a reported fee of 20.3 Euros (£16.3M). So although his immediate future is secure, Euro 2008 represents a great opportunity for Bosingwa to demonstrate his abilities to his new fans.
