John Terry Signs Astronomical Deal
Following a summer of speculation John Terry has put pen to paper on a new 5 year deal to stay with Premiership side Chelsea. This news was welcomed by relieved fans. However, it is not the signing that takes the headlines but the terms of the deal. John Terry’s new contract puts the player on £135,000 a week and has renewed discussion on spiraling player wages.
England captain Terry became the highest paid player in the UK when he signed the agreement to stay at Stamford Bridge. The deal has sparked new concerns over the ever widening gap between the elite of the Premiership and the remaining leagues. Such soaring prices boosted by increasing media revenue (£2.7 billion) are making the gap between the championship and the premier league unbridgeable. It is already the case that even the majority of Premiership clubs are being priced out of the market never mind newly promoted sides.
