Japan first qualified for the World Cup back in 1998 but failed to impress, losing all of their three games and scoring just one in the process. However their next appearance proved to be their best as they beat Russia and Tunisia to qualify for the knockout stage before losing out to Turkey. Road to 2010 World Cup Japan had a fairly comfortable outing in the third round of the AFC qualifying campaign, finishing at the top of their group but struggled for form in the next round and finished five points behind Australia. Japan’s pre-tournament form too has left much to be desired with Okada’s side losing out 3-0 to Serbia in a friendly game. Key Players
Four European based players have been included in the 23-man squad with Keisuke Honda of CSKA Moscow, Wolfsburg’s Makoto Hasebe, Daisuke Matsui from Grenoble and Catania forward Takayuki Morimoto all included in the squad. Shunsuke Nakamura and Junichi Inamoto also find a place in the squad and will be looking to help their side progress out of a tough group that includes Netherlands, Cameroon and Denmark.
