Italy are one of the most successful sides to have played in the World Cup, playing in six finals and winning four. The Azzurri first won the trophy in 1934 before successfully defending it four years later. However they had to wait for nearly five decades before getting their hands on the World Cup in 1982 while they upset the odds by lifting the trophy last time around after a narrow victory over France.

Road to 2010 World Cup

The Italians had a fairly easy qualifying campaign, winning seven of their 10 group games to finish six points clear of second placed Republic of Ireland. While fans will be optimistic that their side can repeat the performance from last time around, Italy have a tough fight on hand if they are to equal Brazil’s record of five World Cup triumphs.

Italy are expected to secure a comfortable passage to at least the quarter finals after being grouped with New Zealand, Slovakia and Paraguay while either Netherlands, Cameroon or Denmark expected to meet them in the knockout stage.

Veterans Francesco Totti, Luca Toni and Alessandro Del Piero have not been included in the squad with coach Marcello Lippi sticking with the players that helped Italy secure a comfortable passage to the World Cup finals.

The Azzurri have one of the best defense and midfield in the competition and Lippi will be optimistic that it will be enough for another successful World Cup campaign this summer.
