Home Under The Hammers

West Ham chairman David Sullivan believes his club have the upper hand in their bid to be re-housed at the Olympic Stadium – because Tottenham’s proposed move to the venue would spark riots in east London.

The new stadium is located in West Ham territory and there has been some suggestion Tottenham’s interest in the site doesn’t sit well with their own supporters.

But a lot could depend on which club retains their Premier League status - and even the most ardent Hammers fan would probably admit Tottenham are more likely to be in the top flight two years down the line.

Spurs insist they are only looking at the venue as an option, as they are fully committed to redeveloping their current home, White Hart Lane.

But an increased capacity would have repercussions for the already problematic transport system that leads into Tottenham’s home.

Despite this the idea of Spurs leaving the door open for a switch to the Olympic site is a non-starter, according to Sullivan at least.

He said: “It would be such a slap in the face to east London. If it happens, there will be real problems that could easily lead to civil unrest.”

Organisers of the London Games in 2012 are also keen for the stadium to retain a running track and that could work in West Ham’s favour.
