Harry happy with his lot?...yeah, right
For the moment, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has kept his notoriously tight hand on the purse strings. But nobody really expects that to be the end of this matter. Spurs took four points out of six over Christmas and kept another clean sheet in the FA Cup last weekend against Championship strugglers Peterborough. Gomes starred Boxing Day’s 0-0 draw with West London rivals Fulham, pulling off a string of fine saves in sharp contrast to his error-strewn performance in 2008’s corresponding fixture, which nearly persuaded Redknapp to let him go. Gomes was less busy as Spurs overcame East London strugglers West Ham at the Lane two days later and beat Peterborough 4-0 last Saturday. Redknapp was James’ manager at Portsmouth before he left for Spurs and Pompey’s finances collapsed. The former boss of financial strugglers Portsmouth, West Ham and Bournemouth has been looking for a back-up goalkeeper since Carlo Cudicini’s injury in a motor-cycle accident in November. Levy is reluctant to sanction expenditure on the 39-year-old James, because of the £1m transfer fee the desperate South Coast outfit are seeking and of James’ considerable wages. When Spurs signed Cudicini from Chelsea, the Italian custodian was revealed to have been sitting on the Stamford Bridge bench for £60,000-per-week. Levy is anxious to avoid that sort of outlay, and possibly more, again. Instead, Redknapp has been looking at Championship keepers, most recently Peterborough’s 22-year-old netminder Joe Lewis, who shares a name with Spurs ultimate beneficial owner and impressed in the FA Cup tie, despite the scoreline.
According to a Guardian report, Redknapp met fellow wheeler-dealer Barry Fry, Peterborough’s director of football, after Saturday’s match to “grant (Redknapp) first option on Lewis.” Redknapp is also reportedly interested in Watford’s England under-21 keeper Scott Loach and Coventry’s 25-year-old Irish international keeper Kieren Westwood. Meanwhile, want-away Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko will almost certainly see his wish come true, as Redknapp said he would be prepared to let the 28-year-old leave “if somebody wants to pay the money that he is worth.” However, Redknapp has claimed that “I’m not crazy to shift him out, he’s a talented footballer.” Fulham have expressed an interest in Pavlyuchenko as cover for the recently-injured striker Bobby Zamora. Redknapp may further re-shuffle Spurs’ strikeforce by swapping club captain Robbie Keane with Villa’s in-form Norwegian striker John Carew, in a deal which may include out-of-favour midfielder David Bentley as a makeweight.
