South Africa failed to qualify for the 2010 African Cup of Nations, but fans will be hopeful of a good showing from Bafana Bafana after seeing their performances in last year’s Confederations Cup. A lot will depend on whether Everton’s Steven Pienaar manages to pull the strings in midfield. Pienaar will have to be ably supported by captain Aaron Mokoena, Teko Modise, Kagisho Dikgacoi and co.

The first game of the tournament sees South Africa take on Mexico. El Tri are a team that opposition coaches will not take lightly. Javier Aguirre’s men are currently the second highest ranked team in the Americas behind the United States and boast of several quality players like Carlos Vela, Rafael Marquez and Andres Guardado.

The other two teams in the group are France and Uruguay, who were also pitted against each other in Group A eight years ago in Korea and Japan. Neither of the two qualified on that occasion and both Les Bleus and La Celeste will be hoping for better luck this time around in South Africa. France are the highest ranked team in this group, but their inconsistency under Raymond Domenech has been a cause of serious concern for their fans. A disastrous Euro 2008 and a far from impressive World Cup qualifying campaign means that other teams will fancy their chances of upsetting Les Bleus.
