Greece 2-0 HungaryGreece topped Group C after their June 2 clash with Hungary thanks to Turkey losing out to Bosnia-Herzegovina. It was always an easy game for the defending champions, but they still had to get the points on board and Otto Rehhagel's side did just that in the Hungary game played in Crete at the Pankritio stadium.
Ioannis Amanatidis featured in an attacking formation as the coach elected to deploy three strikers for the Hungary game. Amanatidis had a chance to put the home team ahead inside seven minutes, but his shot was narrowly over. Georgios Karagounis tested the Hungary keeper Zoltán Végh just afterward.
Hungary had a golden chance to forge ahead, but Zoltán Gera was unable to beat Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Chalkias. Theofanis Gekas punished Hungary almost immediately afterward as he directed a low shot into the Hungary goal following a beautiful cross from Amanatidis.
That goal in the 16th minute put Greece on their way to victory, which was fully sealed when Giourkas Seitaridis fired a low, but fierce shot past a helpless Végh. Just before half time, Greece had a chance to go three up when Amanatidis hit the post from close range.
Gekas had a chance to double his tally in the second half, but shot wide off the target. Hungary were never really in the game and after that initial missed chance almost accepted defeat within the first 45 minutes.
Greece top Group C with 15 points from six games, while Hungary have sis points from six games and are at the fifth spot.
