Greece v MoldovaGreece bounced back from a 4-1 thrashing by Turkey in March with a solid victory over Hungary in their Euro 2008 qualifier match on Saturday. The win sees Greece go 2 points clear at the top of the group, leaving them in pole position to qualify for the Euro 2008 championship next year.
First international goals from Fanis Gekas and Yourkas Seitaridis were enough for Greece to win their match against Hungary at the Pangritio Stadium in Crete. Defender Georgos Anatolakis was delighted with the victory and said that the advantage was with Greece in the run up to the Euro 2008 championship.
"After a bad result against Turkey we showed character against Malta and got what we wanted. This gives us an advantage ahead of our next games. We stayed together today and played well", he said. Coach Otto Rehhagel will be confident of repeating the victory against bottom-placed Moldova on June 6.
"We have covered half the distance but we still need to put in a lot more work and sweat to qualify. It will not be an easy match against Moldova on Wednesday. They are not coming here to lose", he added. Greece is currently at top of the group with 15 points from 6 games.
Meanwhile Moldova will look to take advantage of fresher legs ahead of their match against Greece. Coach Anatol Teslev has recalled FC Spartak Moskva's Serghei Covalciuc while Alexei Savinov gets a look in after impressing Teslev.
Moldova will be without the services of Serghei Dadu, who is suspended, while Andrei Corneencov and Stanislav Ivanov are out due to injuries. FC Iskra-Stali's Nicolae Josan and FC Tiraspol's Stanislav Namasco might make their debuts for the national side. Moldova is currently at the bottom of the table with just 2 points from six matches. Greece v Moldova will kick off at 19:30 on Wednesday. Tags: Greece, Euro 2008 qualifier, Euro 2008, Moldova, Greece v Moldova Posted: |
