Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard was today charged with assault and affray after been involved in an altercation at a night club which left a man needing hospital treatment. Only hours earlier, Gerrard scored twice as his side romped to a 5-1 win at Newcastle.

 

Liverpool have offered their captain their full support and whilst following in a long and undistinguished line of Premier League players grabbing front as well as back page headlines the incident is still under investigation and the England midfielder also received some support from the FA whose only comment is that his place in the national side was ’not under question’.

After the game at St James’ Park, Gerrard said that the current crop of ‘Pool players formed the best squad he has seen during his time at Anfield. Clearly, he feels that the English league title is within the grasp of the red half of Merseyside for the first time in almost two decades. How ironic therefore that a potential title-winning season is now in danger of derailing by off-the-field exploits.
