Fulham

This summer Fulham have been by far the most active Premier League club. In the last few months they have signed ten new players and more are expected before the close of the transfer window at the end of August.

Andrew Johnson is the club’s biggest signing. The former Crystal Palace Striker joins from Everton for a club record £11 Million. He will be joined up front in a new look strike force by Bobby Zamora. He moved to Craven Cottage along with defender John Paintsil from West Ham United for a combined transfer fee of £6.3 Million.

Manager Roy Hodgson has also added experienced Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer to the squad. He joins from Middlesboro on a free transfer. Winger Zoltan Gera has agreed to join Fulham from newly promoted West Bromich Albion for an undisclosed fee and Swedish defender Fredrik Stoor joins from Rosenburg for £2 Million.

Veteran Swiss international Pascal Zuberbuhler has also joined and will challenge Schwarzer and Antti Niemi for the goalkeeper position. Finally, Hodgson has also added midfielder Andranik from Bolton on a free transfer.

To counter balance the large number of arrivals at Craven Cottage, Hodgson has also allowed some of the more experienced players to leave. Americans Carlos Bocanegra, Kasey Keller and Brian McBride were all released in May. McBride in particular was a fan’s favourite and will sorely be missed. He has since signed for MLS team Chicago Fire. Hodgson has also let go Tony Warner, Ian Pearce, Jari Litmanen, Simon Elliott and Phillippe Christanval leave on free transfers. Goalkeeper Ricardo Batista has joined Benfica and Defender Dejan Stefanovic has moved to Championsip team Norwich City.

Fulham fans will probably be forgiven for being a little bit uncertain about what to expect from their team this season. Roy Hodgson has certainly earned their respect after seemingly doing the impossible and keeping then in the Premier League after many had written them off. With so many new faces it is hard to gauge what to expect from them. Certainly the acquisition of Johnson should provide the goals they missed last year, but the defence still looks to be as vulnerable as in previous years.

However with Hodgson’s experience and the likes of Jimmy Bullard and Gera supporting the forwards, Fulham should be able to hold their own. Indeed, if Fulham are still in the Premiership at the end of the season their fans will be satisfied.
