Frei Breaks Swiss Goal Scoring Record in Friendly WinBorussia Dortmund striker Alexander Frei celebrated becoming Switzerland’s record international goalscorer after scoring twice in a comfortable 3-0 victory against neighbors Liechtenstein . This was Switzerland’s last warm up game prior to the start of Euro 2008 and provided a great tonic for the hosts. Coach Kobi Kuhn named his strongest team for the game in St. Gallen, with the only absentee being midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta. He is an injury doubt for the start of Euro 2008, but his replacement Johan Vonlanthen proved to be adequate.
The Swiss began the game brightly and almost scored early through Frei. However, it was not long before the 28 year old got on the scoresheet by heading home from close range in the 23rd minute. The goal equalled the existing record held by Kubilay Turkyilmaz. ![]()
It did not take long for Frei to take the record. On 30 minutes he got on the end of a cross from Ludovic Magnin to finish with aplomb.
The game was all but over at this stage and was confirmed midway through the second half. Following a neat interchange between Frei and Hakin Yakin, Vonlanthen was the quickest to react in the penalty area to coolly slot past the hapless Leichenstein keeper Peter Jehle.
Following the game, the delight from Frei was palpable. He said "I wrote history… It was a great moment and a great feeling”.
A jubilant Switzerland will now prepare for their Euro 2008 opening game against Czech Republic that takes place on 7 June. Tags: Alexander Frei, Euro 2008, Kobi Kuhn, Switzerland Posted: |
