France 1-0 GeorgiaFrance continued to steamroll towards the qualification spot for next year's Euro 2008 finals with a convincing 1-0 victory over Georgia at the Abbé-Deschamps stadium in Auxerre on Wednesday.
The score line flattered Georgia since France had taken complete control of the game and were very unlucky not to win by more than a one-goal margin. Coach Raymond Domenech persisted with the 4-5-1 formation and was seeking a fourth successive victory in the qualification campaign.
Franck Ribery and Samir Nasri were once again impressive for France and are increasingly looking comfortable in taking over the responsibility in the midfield from Zidane and Viera. France started the match with the same team that had won the match against Ukraine on Saturday, with the lone exception being the presence of Mickael Landreau in place of the injured Gregory Coupet.
France's domination over their opponent could be gauged from the stats that show Les Bleus hitting 13 shots even before the half an hour mark. A number of chances were either saved by the beleaguered Georgia keeper or were missed by the French.
First chance of the match fell to Ribery, when he combined with Nasri to exchange a couple of quick passes before shooting the ball towards the target, only for Georgi Lomaia to block the ball away. Anelka had a couple of good chances, but was unable to put them away.
France was finally rewarded in the 33rd minute with Ribery and Nasri teaming up once again to provide the lead. Ribery collected a pass from Francois Clerc, foxed two defenders in a single movement and crossed the ball into Nasri's path who made no mistake to score his first goal in national colors.
Second half started in the same way as the first, with France camping out in the Georgian half. Domenech decided call off Malouda, replacing the winger with Djibril Cisse, who was making his first appearance for France since breaking his leg almost a year ago.
Ribery continued to wreck havoc on Georgia defense, providing an excellent chance for Anelka in the 67th minute, but the Bolton Wanderers striker shot his effort well wide of the goal. Cisse had a chance of score in his comeback game, but a charging Lomaia narrowed down the angle and the Marseille forward curled the ball just wide of the post. France's latest victory sees them sit at the top of the group with 18 points from 7 matches, setting up a mouthwatering tie against second-placed Italy when the two teams meet in September.
