France Omit David TrezeguetJuventus striker David Trezeguet failed to make the cut as France coach Raymond Domenech announced his provisional squad of 30. While his club teammate Alessandro Del Piero has done enough to convince Roberto Donadoni to put him into the Italian provisional squad, Trezeguet has apparently not been considered important enough by Domenech. The 30 year old striker scored 20 goals for Juventus this season, but making it to a team with the likes of Thierry Henry, Karim Benzema, Samir Ben Nasri, Hatem Ben Arfa, Djibril Cisse, Sidney Govou and Nicolas Anelka as competition was always going to be tough.
Domenech has however chosen unheralded St. Etienne striker Bafetimbi Gomis in his thirty member squad, which will be trimmed as the May 28 deadline approaches. Trezeguet, the only French player to miss his spotkick at the 2006 World Cup final, scored two goals in France's qualification campaign for Euro 2008. He was the scorer of the golden goal that gave France victory at Euro 2000, the last European Championship to be co hosted.
Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri has expressed his shock over the decision, and quite a few football fans across the world will be feeling puzzled as well. However, given that France have no dearth of quality strikers upfront, Trezeguet may not be missed at Euro 2008. Tags: Juventus, David Trezeguet, Bafetimbi Gomis, Euro 2008, France Posted: |
