France v GeorgiaFrance's 2-0 victory against Ukraine on Saturday has left the World Cup finalists in the top spot of their group and in the driver's seat to qualify for the Euro 2008 finals.
Franck Ribery and Nicolas Anelka scored in the second half has left the team at the top of the group with 15 points from six games. Youngster Samir Nasri continued to impress at the national level with another lively performance in the midfield.
However it was Ribery who broke through a stubborn Ukrainian defense in the 57th minute with a brilliant goal following a great through ball from Makelele. Nicolas Anelka completed the proceedings with a superb volley in the 71st minute.
France coach Raymond Domenech said that while everybody is happy with the victory over Ukraine, he wants the team to be focused ahead of the match against Georgia on June 6. "Everybody is satisfied and I am already thinking of our next match against Georgia in Auxerre on Wednesday. They (Georgia) have some good players. We have to win that game if we want to start our holidays in peace", he said.
France will be without keeper Gregory Coupet for the match against Georgia after he left the team's training camp near Paris due to injury. A France team spokesman refused to throw more light on the nature or extent of the injury. Domenech has called up Paris St Germain's Mickael Landreau as the replacement for Coupet. Meanwhile any hopes for a Georgia qualification to the Euro 2008 finals were extinguished with a 1-0 defeat to Lithuania on Saturday. Georgia is currently in sixth position with 6 points from 7 games. France v Georgia will be available with live football at 20:00 gmt on Wednesday.
